Elden Bradbury is a local farmer who has been farming for 63 years. He and his brother, Earl, started farming to support their families and to try to make a living. Elden and his brother were the first farmers in the area to ship potatoes to Boston. He has also shipped to Bucksport, Maine by boat and by railroad.

Now, Mr. Bradbury farms with his family. He recognized that his family has played an integral part of his farming history. He and wife, Ellie, have three sons and a daughter. This has grown to be a family operation. Mr. Bradbury commented on how he could not farm alone and appreciates the ongoing support of his family.

Several years ago, he started selling bags of potatoes on the back of a
pick- up truck parked along the roadside. Due to the reputation for consistent quality his roadside stand business has grown. He now has apermanent potato stand in his shop located on Main Street in Bridgewater. He commented on the returning customers from downstate who specifically make trips north to purchase his potatoes.

Mr. Bradbury plants oats as a rotation crop. Of the six potato farmers that still farm in Bridgewater, Elden’s farm is the smallest in acreage.
