POTATO PICKERS SPECIAL
Wayne Knight was the original host of Potato Pickers Special. The radio
is an excellent means for farmers to get information to their crews, and
it has been well used for many years. From 4:00 A.M. to 6:30 A.M. Wayne
passed along information, news and weather. Wayne wanted to assist farmers
by getting out information to the harvest crews, so he started Potato
Pickers Special in 1959. He hosted the show for 36 years. When Wayne started
the program, there were 4,800 growers and today there are less than 500.
Today Potato Pickers Special isn’t anything like it used to be like,
but it’s still the place to find out what’s going on with
the growers. It starts at 4:30 A.M. and ends at 6:00 A.M and is hosted
by the Maine Potato Board. Various guests appear, and the industry is
covered by many angles, from politics to statistics. The Potato Pickers
Special is now broadcasted from the studios of WAGM TV in Presque Isle,
Maine.
